Abstract(RO): Survey Pre- and post 1989 political, communications, and educational trends in East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Hungary were examined through a survey of 129 political/social scientists, health professionals, and highly educated elites from Eastern European nations, not including Albania and the former USSR. Political changes were found in all countries, but were the greatest in the Czech Republic, East Germany, and Romania. After 1989 the prospects for the use of military force were lessened in all countries Romania having the highest potential for use of military force. Party and ideological control of political education decreased after 1989. With the exception of East Germany, ethnic and political tolerance increased in most countries. Nationalism increased in five countries, but decreased in Romania.
