Abstract(EN): Given the fact that the Balkans have been home to a plethora of ethnic groups and minorities on a too small geographical space, the national question in the Balkans is still a highly topical issue. The books reveals how history demonstrates that at a certain point in its development, the national idea gives birth to nationalism, which is easily transformed into separatism and extremism. This has led to war, ethnic cleansing and mutual extermination. The past has put a cross over the multinational empires. The present demonstrates the other extreme, the excessive segmentation of geopolitical space. Against this background, the author seeks to prove that a solution to national questions is to be sought in the establishment of democratic societies, within which mutual recognition, respect and acceptance will become the norm behavior.
