Abstract: (RO) BISERICA CU HRAMUL SFANTULUI IOAN BOTEZATORUL DIN ARAD
Rezumat
În zona centralº a Aradului, pe locul unde se aflº azi Colegiul Naþional „Moise Nicoarº", a existat pânº în anul 1861 biserica cu hramul Sfântului Ioan Botezºtorul, catedrala Eparhiei Aradului, aparþinând Mitropoliei de Karlovºþ. Biserica a fost ziditº în 1791, pe vremea arhipºstoririi episcopului Pavle Avakumoviã, pe locul pe care se afla pânº atunci o altº bisericº mult mai micº, despre care tradiþia spune cº a fost ctitoria nobilului sârb Dmitar Jakšiã din Nºdlac, ziditº la sfºr¤itul secolului al XV-lea. Pânº în 1704, ctitoria lui Dimitrije Jakšiã a fost biserica parohialº a cartierului Ciucovaþ (Ãukovac) din Aradul Vechi, când episcopul Isaija Ðakoviã o ridicº la rang de catedralº, mutând re¤edinþa Episcopiei de la Ineu la Arad. Din 1704, timp de peste 150 de ani, aceastº bisericº a fost centrul ortodoxiei în aria geograficº cuprinzând valea Mure¤ului, Cri¤ana ¤i Bihorul ¤i focarul de culturº pentru sârbi, români, aromâni, greci de religie ortodoxº de pe aceste meleguri. În „mica ¤coala iliricº" a acestei biserici au învºþat multe generaþii de arºdeni. Pânº în anii treizeci ai secolului al XIX-lea limba liturgicº utilizatº în aceastº bisericº a fost limba slavonº, care, pe timpul arhipºstoririi episcopului Gherasim Raþ, a fost înlocuitº cu limba românº. Curând dupº aceasta a fost desfiinþatº ¤i ¤coala confesionalº sârbº ¤i înlocuitº cu ¤coala cu limba de predare românº. Pentru cº se afla în imediatº apropiere a cetºþii Aradului, dupº evenimentele din 1848/49 autoritºþile militare austriece au dispus demolarea bisericii, ceea se a avut loc
în anul 1861.
THE CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST IN ARAD
Summary
In the central zone of Arad, in the place where the grammar school "Moise Nicoara" stands now, till 1861 there stood the church of the temple of Saint John the Baptist— the cathedral church of the Arad Eparchy, subordinated to the Karlovci Metropolitanate. The Church was built in 1791, during the arch-pastorship of the episcope Pavle Avakumoviã; another, much smaller church had stood there before, constructed at the end of the 15th century — the endowment of the Serbian aristocrat Dmitar Jakšiã from Nadlak. Till 1704, it was a parish church of the Ãukovac sector of Old Arad, and then became the cathedral church, during the episcope Isaija Ðakoviã, who transferred the seat of the episcopate from Ineu to Arad. Starting from 1704, during more than 150 years, this church was the centre of Orthodoxy in the geographical region which included the Mure¤ valley, Cri¤ana and Bihor; it was the focus of culture for the Orthodox Serbs, Romanians, Tzintzars and
Greeks from this area. Many generations of the inhabitants of Arad studied in "the small Illyrian school" of this Church. Till 1830s, the language of the religious service in that Church was Slavic, and then, during the arch-pastorship of the bishop Gerasim Rac, it was replaced with Romanian. Soon after that, the Serbian confessional school was abolished and it was replaced with the school in which the Romanian language was used in teaching. Because it was located in the vicinity of the Arad fortress, after the 1848/49 events the Austrian military authorities ordered its destruction, which was done in 1861.
