Abstract: (En) Gherla has not received its name Örményváros (Armenian town) by accident: since its inhabitants are mostly Amienians. According to the census conveyed by Joscph II. in 1786 the proportion of the strangers was only 2%. One of the protocollums in the Archieves of the Archiepiscopal and Main Chapter of Alba Julia preserves the canonica visitatio from 1781, from which we can get to know many interesting data. The visitatio was written in Latin in the course of Ignác Batthyány (1780-1798), the bishop of Transylvania.
The visitatio consists of three parts: I. generál part, II. tasks to do, III. inventariums (the equipments of the parish, the books of the parish and the equipment of the Church of Solomon).
The general part can be devided into further twelve parts (I. About the church and its signifances. The building, its state and fittings; II. About the equipments of the church and the chasuble; III. About the incomes of the church; IV. About the communitics; V. About public chapels, hospitalities, cemetaries, statues, crucifixes; VI. About other denominations' churches and cemetaries; VII. About titular monasteries, VIII. About the vicar and his duties; IX. About the vicar's residence and his incomes; X. About his schools and their teachers, about the servants of the church and their domicile and incomes; XI. About the clerical orders; XII. About the parish and its duties), which include subsections.
By that time the Armenians have been living at the bank of Szamos for nearly 81 years. The parish, next to the church founded by the family Simái, has already been completed. The unión with Romé seems to be strong, since this visitation does not highlight any possible confrontation related to religion. The fasting is kept, people attend mass and catcchism. The clergymen do their work properly, regarding their number they live their heyday; there are fourteen ministers who give hand to the clergyman! They hold public processions on the most famous feasts, moreover they often lead the worship of sanctity. The administration of the sacraments' serving has started. Yet the state of the parishes is dubious, their finantial background is chaotic.
The essay is to show the situation of Gherla in 1781 according to the minutes and details of the visitation.
