Abstract: (ENG) The Hungarian emmigrant mentioned in the subtitle was Sándor Veress, a member of the Kossuth emigration who settled down in Bucarest and worked as a geometer. His manuscript, ÑThe History of Romaniaî, now in the library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, describes the history of the Romanians from the Ancient times to the 19th century discusses contemporary political, economic and cultural issues. The first part of the paper gives a short introduction to the political changes betwen 1856-1878 in Romania. This was the period when political elit created the liberal parlamentary state and started the economic modernisation. It was part of the changes that they tried to create a linguistically homogenious state, encouraging the assimilation of all the nationalitis which were ready for this, except of the jews. Veress's comments on the integration forces of this transitional society and its etnic structure are the most interesting parts of his work. According to him the Romanian and especially the Vallachian social-cultural conditions were conspiciously favourable for the assimilation of even entire ethnic groups. The credibility of his reports, regardless of his unscientific comments on linguistics, is justified by the twenty-year-long period be spent working in the region.
