Abstract: (ENG) Beginning in the eighteenth century, this region (Banat) inhabited by Romanians, Serbs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, Slovaks, Turks, and Armenians, developed a genuine transethnic East European civilization. As the great turning plate between Vienna and Constantinople, the Banat area redefined Europe itself as an intercrossing of multiple traditions, rather than a homogeneous cultural space. As Victor Neumann puts it - If not entirely a Mitteleuropa, [the Banat was] in any case a Kleineeuropa, synthesizing the civilizations of the East and West.
