Abstract: (ENG) The German minority in Romania lived through an eventful and at the same time complex history in the twentieth century which took place not only within but also outside the land in the Carpathian arc. The fact that both phases belong together becomes only too clear if one looks at the cultural and social patterns of belonging together of the German migrants from Romania, indeed when it become apparent that a part of these people can be subsumed under the status of an „ethnic minority” not only in Romania, but also afterwards in Germany. In the following paper, on the basis of case studies of Banat Swabians and Transylvanian Saxons, the question is asked what happened to the German minority during and after the migration. At the centre of attention are questions of identity in connection with migration. How do migrants’ self- attribution and outside attribution processes turn out in this connection? And what consequences do they have for integration in Germany?
