Mega cultural events as the European Capitals of Culture (ECoC) could be seen as suitable opportunities for setting up strategies for local identity promotion. Alongside artistic programmes, numerous European cultural capital cities promote their identity through favorable mechanisms. This way, they avoid and reject external unfavorable identity images, very often based on strong prejudice. The case study used by this article is based on the ECoC in Romania and Luxembourg, which managed by a successful identity promotion campaign to overpass a given cultural marginality, rather specific to smaller states in Western Europe and to almost all former communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Using the ECoC opportunity, candidate cities have successfully affirmed a common cultural dimension, which reunites them with the other European capital cities. In the same time, they have consolidated a dimension that is otherwise difficult to observe, namely the European identity.
