Castellan, Georges: The Germans of Rumania. In: Journal of Contemporary History. An. 6. (1971) Nr. 1. pp. 52 – 75.
In present-day Rumania, there are about 400,000 Rumanian nationals whose mother tongue is German. In the Greater Rumania of the Treaty of Versailles, there were approximately 750,000. The difference is one result of Hitler's war, which was a tragedy for Germanism in Rumania as in Europe as a whole. The census used for the inter-war period is that of I930. According to this census, in a total population of 18 million, there were I3 million Rumanians (72 per cent) and almost 5 million 'others'.' Among the latter, the greatest number (I-4 million, or 7-9 per cent) were Magyars; then Germans -745,42I, or 4'I per cent, closely followed by Jews (728,115).
