Abstract: Czernowitz, located in south west Ukraine, was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire during the 18th century and was handed over to Rumania after WWI. In 1941 it was acquired by the USSR and today is part of Ukraine. In the past, Czernowitz was a flourishing center of commerce and culture, even called: "Little Vienna of the East". In the Jewish community there was a mix of different life styles; typical small town (Shtetel) and a modern European. The town's cultural pluralism produced a number of famous Jews such as: Paul Celan, Itzik Manger, Eliezer Steinberg, and Aharon Appelfeld. Every week, former residents of Czernowitz meet at the Beit Lesin theatre in Tel Aviv and recall their memories. In this film, they tell about their life in Czernowitz, its cultural pluralism in the past, Czernowitz today, the Jewish life, time of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, rich Yiddish culture, cafes, Jewish business and newspapers, Zionist movement, and deportations to Transnistria. Archive Films Pre-war Czernowitz, its people and street scenes. Arrests of Jews. Among the participants in the film: Itzak Artzi, Chairman of the World Organization of Bukovina Jews.
