Abstract: (En) Rooted in the tradition of Roman Dacia Jewish life in Transylvania was a constitutive element of the medieval and pre modern history of the province with a growing contribution to the demographic, economic and social fields as the dawn of the modern era was drawing near, Crystallizing their own institutional structures, surviving the waves of intolerance stirred by popular prejudices and an official policy that often threatened its very survival, the Jewish community benefited from the new atmosphere of the 19th century to enter in the age of emancipation, renovation and modernization The inter-war period, which witnessed a flourishing Jewish ljfe in Transylvania, rich and variegate what concerned its institutions, manifestations and achievements, ended unfortunately with the collapse of the democratic parliamentary regime and of successive dictatorships which inaugurated the tragic age of the Holocaust. Present day communities, centered around a still functioning synagogue, whose members are mostly elderly people hear witness to a past marked by the vicissitudes of nefarious dictatorships and prejudices, as well as to an undeniable contiibution to the material and spiritual creation in a Romanian area of high intercultuial richness. Even though most of the Transylvanian Jews ate now living in other parts ol the world, the setting up of academic centers of the Jewish culture in the last 5 years, following a path opened in Transylvania by the or Moshe Carmilly Institute for Hebrew and Jewish History of Cluj. enables them to treasure the Jewish cultural tradition and preserve it for the generations to come, this book seeking to be but a modest brick in this long-lasting edifice.

(Ro) Viaţa evreiască în Transilvania, cu rădăcini îndepărtate în tradiţia Daciei romane, constituie o componentă a istoriei medievale şi premoderne a acestei provincii, cu o pondere crescândă în plan demografic, economic 41 social pe măsura apropiem de zorii modernizării Cristalizăndu-şi propriile structuri instituţionale, supravieţuind valurilor de intoleranţa generate de prejudecăţi populare ţi de o politica oficială devenită deseori ameninţătoare pentru supravieţuirea ei. comunitatea evreiască beneficiază de noul climat al veacului al xIx-lea pentru a intra întărită organizatoric şi sporită numeric în epoca emancipării, înnoirii şi modernizării. Perioada interbelică, martora a unei înfloritoare vieţi evreieşti de o remarcabili bogăţie şi varietate a instituţiilor, manifestărilor şi realizărilor sale. se încheie din păcate in tonurile sumbre ale prăbuşirii regimului parlamentar-democratic. ale unor dictaturi succesive care deschid tragica epocă a Holocaustului şi pentru evreu din Transilvania. Comunităţile existente astăzi, grupate în jurul căte unei sinagogi aflate încă în funcţiune, cu marea majoritate a membrilor de vârsta a treia, reprezintă mărturiile unui trecut grevat de vicisitudinile unor dictaturi şi prejudecăţi funeste, dar şi ale unei contribuţii incontestabile la creaţia spirituală şi materială dintr-o zona de o mare bogăţie interculturală a României. Chiar dacă marea majoritate a evreilor romani trăiesc astăzi în alte zone ale lumii, crearea în ultimii 15 ani a unor centre academice de cultură iudaică, pe un drum deschis pentru Transilvania de Institutul dc ludaistică şi Istoric Evreiască Dr. Moshe Carmilly" din Cluj. oferă posibilitatea păstrării tradiţiei culturale evreieşti pentru generaţiile ce vor veni, aceasta carte fiind menită a constitui o modestă cărămida a unui astfel de edificiu durabil
