Abstract: This documentary film is based on home footage filmed with an 8 mm camera and documents the activities of Jewish Slovakian refugees as they made their way along the river Danube until their arrival in Mandate Israel. The two illegal boats, "The Elizabeth" and "The Fat Czar", were rented by Jewish organizations in Bratislava for young Jews needing to escape from the Nazis. They began their journey in July 1939 and only at the end of September, after 83 days of mishaps and uncertainty, arrived at Haifa port. The film presents mostly authentic photographs along with an added soundtrack of the river, port, engines, music from the period, songs and prayers said by the refugees. Original music is by the composer Tibor Szemzo, the usual collaborator of the director of the film, Peter Forgacs.
