Abstract: In this documentary, shown at the Toronto, Berlin, Rome and London Film Festivals, filmmaker Davide Ferrario attempts to follow in the footsteps of the late Levi's circuitous 1945 journey back from Auschwitz, where the Italian-Jewish writer managed to survive. Ferrario and his cameras logically begin the story at Auschwitz, where the 60th-anniversary ceremony of its liberation is taking place. Then, with celebrated Polish director Andrzej Wajda on board, we are thrust into Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Germany and Austria. A journey that suggests decline, ruin or rebirth through change, progress and capitalism. In some memorable jolts of reality, the filmmakers get their cameras into a neo-Nazi meeting in Munich and, later, make a rare connection with their subject in Italy when they meet Mario Rigoni Stern, Levi's longtime friend. Actor Chris Cooper reads Levi's words.
