Abstract: (En) Jewish School and Culture in the Romanian Principalities. Between Tradition and Modernity. One of the main concerns of the Jewish traditional society was education, as means of preserving and handing down from generation to generation the treasure of the Jewish cultural and religious heritage. The present paper attempts at presenting a brief review of the cultural and educational achievements of the Jewish communities in Moldavia and Wallachia, since their beginnings to the threshold of the modern age, when they embarked upon the road to emancipation and modernization. It also emphasizes the major part played by the modern Jewish schools in this process and their contribution to the emergence of a Jewish intellectual elite.
